What do you want to see in winter travel in Japan?
You can see the beautiful icicle world in Chichibu, Saitama prefecture.
It takes about 1,5H from Tokyo, Ikebukuro. There are two famous icicle places.
One is in "Ashigakubo". You will walk about 10 mins from the station to icicle spot but the way is also good to walk. You can feel the nature and feel relaxed.
I did not see many foreign people there so maybe they do not know here...
The icicle entrance... you see the "tori-i gate" of Fuji sengen jinjya( the shrine near Mt. Fuji).
You will probably get the good luck after you pass through it!
At weekend night, you can see the icicles illumination. That is amazing!
Another is in "Misotsuchi". This is natural icicles so it changes the appearance every year.
The height is about 8 meter and the icicles are along the river. The river is very clear.
Here the icicles are lit up every night.
I saw some foreigners even here is in the mountain.
There are the famous shrine and hotsprings around icicles place so I think you can enjoy in that area.
